MODEL KITS

Brands: Tamiya, Airfix, Dragon, Revell-Monogram, Hasegawa, Fujimi, Academy, Trumpeter, Italeri, Hella, Gunze Sangyo, Modelcraft, Mirage, ASV.

One of the largest ranges and stocks of model kits in Australia can be seen stacked up to the 5 metre high ceiling. We pride ourselves on stocking a diverse mix of subject matter. Models are available for just about anything that is found in and on water, land, air, space and imagination. Kits are available in the now traditional Styrene plastic, timber, metal, resin, vinyl, plaster or a mixture of all six types, know as Multi-media.

The building of models is highly enjoyable and rewarding. No matter if you are a beginner or a professional, Hobby Place has a kit to suit your skill level and expectations.

Styrene has become the standard medium in which most models are available today. Its popularity grew after the Second World War with the development of advanced mould and material manufacture. Revell and Airfix are pioneers that still manufacture many of their early kits. The Japanese have been able to create moulds of incredible precision. Tamiya is famous as the manufacturer of high precision model kits. Styrene has the ability to hold very sharp detail whilst being quick and easy to mould. Hence, Styrene kits are high quality and easily affordable.

WOODEN KITS

Brands: Artesania Latina, Billings, Mamoli, Corel, Aeroflyte and Guillows.

The complex character and sheer beauty of timber models is unsurpassed. Whether it is a simple plywood animal skeleton or a large square-rigger ship, timber simply strikes awe in the viewer and builder alike.

Balsa is perhaps the most famous of all modelling timbers. Due to being lightweight and strong, it is commonly used for functioning models such as aircraft and boats.

Plywood is found mainly in skeleton style models of animals and insects. These kits comprise of pre-cut parts that are slotted together. They do not require glue.

Finer timbers such as Walnut, Spruce and Pine are found in ship kits. Often the kits will require individual strips of timber to plank over a plywood hull. Small fittings such as deadeyes and blocks offer an additional degree of challenge to the builder. Finished timber ship models make fantastic focal displays in any home. They also provide the builder with tremendous pride of a job well done.

METAL KITS

Brands: Bburago, Maisto and CDC

Metal has weight and solidity unrivalled by any other material. Traditionally used in the casting of tin soldiers, it is now more commonly seen in Diecast kits of cars and aeroplanes.

Diecast metals allow a model to be designed with many functional parts such as moving doors and bonnets on cars. Models to be used as hands-on display pieces are best made from metal.
